What Is My Chinese Zodiac Sign and Element?
Enter your date of birth. We convert it to the Vietnamese lunar calendar, so January and February birthdays before Lunar New Year land in the right year, then show your animal, stem-branch, both kinds of element, lucky colours, Kua number and best matches.
Your result appears here. Try 20 January 1990 — it is still the Snake year, because Lunar New Year 1990 fell on 27 January.
How your zodiac sign is worked out
The Chinese and Vietnamese zodiac follows the lunar year, not the calendar year. Each lunar year starts on Lunar New Year (Tết in Vietnam), usually the second new moon after the winter solstice, which lands between 21 January and 20 February. Your animal is the one of the year in progress when you were born, so the dates in January and February matter.
Every year also carries one of ten Heavenly Stems. Stem and branch together give a sixty-year cycle: 1990 is Canh Ngọ (Geng Wu) and the same pair returns in 2050. The stem supplies the element popular in Chinese horoscopes — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal or Water, each in a yang and a yin form — which is why you see labels like “Metal Horse”.
Vietnamese families more often speak of their mệnh, the nạp âm element. The sixty pairs are grouped two by two into thirty poetic elements such as Sea Metal or Heavenly River Water. The mệnh is what Vietnamese tradition uses to choose lucky colours, numbers and compatible partners, so our results list it next to the stem element.
Your Kua number combines the birth year with your gender and leads to four favourable and four unfavourable compass directions in Eight Mansions feng shui. Finally, the twelve animals form harmonious trines, “secret friend” pairs and clashing opposites — the basis of zodiac compatibility.

Frequently asked questions
I was born in January. What is my zodiac sign?
Probably the previous year’s animal. The zodiac year changes at Lunar New Year, which falls between 21 January and 20 February. Someone born on 20 January 1990 belongs to the Snake year 1989 (Kỷ Tỵ), while someone born on 27 January 1990 or later is a Horse (Canh Ngọ). The tool above converts your exact date.
Why do Chinese websites say my element is different?
Most Chinese horoscope sites quote the element of the year’s Heavenly Stem (1990 = Geng = Metal, hence “Metal Horse”). Vietnamese tradition uses the nạp âm or “sound element” of the stem-branch pair, which for 1990 is Roadside Earth. Both are correct within their own system; we show both.
Is the Cat the same as the Rabbit?
Yes. Both stand for the fourth Earthly Branch, Mão. Vietnam calls it the Cat; China, Korea and Japan use the Rabbit (in Japan and Korea the details differ slightly). Compatibility rules and forecasts are identical.
Does the zodiac year start on 4 February?
In Four Pillars (Bazi) astrology the year changes at Start of Spring (Lập Xuân), around 4 February. Popular zodiac signs and Vietnamese Tử Vi use Lunar New Year instead. If you were born between the two dates, your Bazi year pillar and your zodiac animal can differ.
What is a Kua number?
The Kua (cung phi) is your personal trigram in Eight Mansions feng shui. It depends on your birth year and gender and places you in the East or West group, which determines your four favourable directions. See the feng shui directions tool for room-by-room advice.
